1780 Current Limiter for Larger Solar Panels Driving Smaller Equipment

  • Wide input voltage range 12V...63V. However you have to make sure the device that you are driving on the output is within the range of the maximum output voltage of the solar panel.

  • Adjustable current limiter from 100mA to 1500mA with 99% efficiency. Does not generate any heat.

  • Allows larger solar panels to be used on devices designed to charge batteries from smaller solar panels.

  • Limits the chargers turn-on current to prevent burning out the charger electronics.

  • Makes Solar Panel a Current Source.

1780 Current Limiter for Larger Solar Panels Driving Smaller Solar Equipment

Allows current from a DC Source such as a solar panel to be limited to an adjustable maximum. Battery charging devices that run of Solar normally are paired with an appropriate solar panel limiting the maximum current to the panels capabilities.

Often smaller solar devices that use small solar panels have charging electronics that rely on the maximum current the solar panel can produce. This is to make the devices cost efficient they do not have the extra capacity in their inductors or switching current of the charge-pump transistor.

The 1780 Current Limiter limits the maximum current that a device can draw, protecting the devices charger circuit.

Often larger solar panels help in situations where the panel is shaded for parts of the day or in regions which are frequently overcast. So a light designed for a 18W panel normally has an output voltage of 21V max and a current of 1.2A max. When using a 100W panel on that device the typical output voltage is 24V and the maximum current is 5A which will be fine if all days are overcast, but if there is a chance that the panel could get full sunlight, it is likely to destroy the charger electronics.

This simple device will prevent this from happening, protecting your investment and allowing you to use a bigger panel on a smaller device.

If no current is drawn or the current draw is below the maximum the output voltage is identical to the input voltage. You will have to verify that the device you are driving will allow the higher input voltage. Mostly they do but we take no responsibility if they do not.

The device is inherently short circuit protected as the current will be limited by the device.

The 1780 Current Limiter has an input and an output connection with an indexed snap connector and matching connector with flying leads to allow easy integration into your system. For ActiveLED solar devices the solar panel and charger input are matching those connectors, so the flying lead adapters are not required, simply plug and play.

You must not connect any of the input connections to any of the output connection during operation as this will destroy the device and lose its warranty. Overturning the current adjust trim-potentiometer is not under warranty.
